Innovation Hub, University of Georgia
“Cutting Into Earth” draws inspiration from the geological history of the site and aims to reconnect with the buried elements of its past. Just as the innovation hub at the University of Georgia unearthed a hidden spring, this design concept seeks to further reveal the site’s natural features. The series of raised seating areas, reminiscent of granite quarries, serve as focal points for gathering and contemplation. Grass-covered expanses invite visitors to relax, while gabion walls with water spickets create a soothing ambiance of white noise. An uncovered railroad track meanders through the landscape, offering a journey through a stormwater garden and over a rain collection pond, positioned in alignment with the historic Athens spring. Along the railroad pathway, strategically placed openings encourage exploration of the various spaces within the site. At the heart of the native garden lies a monument, utilizing gestalt theory to visually connect with the railroad track walk. Pathways, aligned with downtown Athens’ grid system, guide visitors seamlessly through the site. Additionally, a permeably paved study area with lush plantings flanks the railroad walk, providing a tranquil setting for reflection and learning. The parti, inspired by the abstract formations etched in granite, pays homage to the site’s history, where shadows echo the past’s enduring presence.
